HOW SEGWAY WORKS
DESIGNED FROM FEET TO HEAD
Segway PT (Segway Personal Transporter) has self-balance due to a technology called dynamic stabilisation. Dynamic Stabilisation works much like your own sense of balance. Where you have an inner ear, eyes, muscles and a brain to keep you in balance, the Segway PT has solid gyroscopes, tilt sensors, high-speed microprocessors and powerful electric motors that work to keep you balanced. Working together, these redundant and widely evaluated systems perceive their centre of gravity, instantly evaluate information, and make adjustments a hundred times per second. Segway PT is balanced whether you are travelling at 16 km / h, carry a heavy load, doing slow manoeuvres in tight spaces or staying perfectly still.
TAKE AHEAD, GO FORWARD
The Segway PT intuitively balances in the same way that humans do - moving forward and backwards, responding to changes in their body posture. No accelerator or brakes. Lean forward and move forward. Get straight and stand up. Lean back and move backwards. To rotate, turn the steering knob in any direction. The operation is natural, intuitive and one of the main reasons the Segway PT effortlessly integrates different situations, environments with pedestrians and everyday life.
SCIENCE BEHIND THE TECHNOLOGY
When Dean Kamen unveiled the Segway PT (Segway Personal Transporter) on ABC's "Good Morning America" program, he described the machine as "the world's first human transporter with its own balance". When you look at the moving machine, you get an idea of what you are talking about.
Unlike a car, the Segway only has two wheels - it looks like a handcart - yet it manages to stay upright by itself. To move forward or backwards on the Segway PT, the user only has to lean slightly forward or backwards. To turn left or right, the user simply has to turn the directional control left or right.

The Segway PT is agile and elegant and can operate on a wide variety of terrains. Slopes, grass, slopes and soil are no obstacle to your ability to go wherever you want. Just like a person walking, all that a Segway PT needs is traction to operate in virtually any environment. The Segway PT has been engineered to operate under a variety of conditions. Its batteries, electronic parts, motors and all other components are sealed and protected climate changes. THE DYNAMICS OF STABILIZATION
The ability to balance itself is the most striking aspect of the Segway PT and is the key to its operation. To understand how this system works, it helps if we consider Kamen's model for the apparatus - the human body. If you stand up and lean forward so that you lose your balance, you probably will not fall on your face. Your brain knows that you are unbalanced because the fluid in your ear is moving, so it makes you move your leg forward to avoid falling. If you continue to lean forward, your brain will continue to put its legs forward to hold it upright. Instead of falling, you walk forward, one step at a time. Like your brain, the Segway knows when you lean forward. To maintain balance, rotate the wheels at the proper speed, so you move forward. Segway calls this behaviour dynamic stabilisation and has patented the unique process that allows the Segway PT to balance only on two wheels.
THE BRAIN AND THE FORCE
At its most basic, the Segway PT is a combination of a series of sensors, a control system and a driving system. In this section, we will look at each of these elements. The main sensor system is a group of gyroscopes. A basic gyroscope is a rotating wheel within a stable frame. A rotating object resists changes in its rotational axes because an applied force moves along with the same object. If pushed at a point on the top of the rotating wheel, for example, that point moves toward the front of the wheel while still feeling the force that has been applied. As the point of force continues to move, it ends by applying force to the opposite ends of the wheel - the force balances itself.
Due to its resistance to external force, a gyroscope wheel will maintain its position in space (relative to the ground), even if it tilts. But the frame of the gyroscope will move freely in space. When measuring the position of the rotating wheel of the gyroscope relative to the frame, a precise sensor may notice the inclination of an object (the inclination it has relative to the vertical position) in addition to the tilt speed (how fast it is tilting). A conventional gyroscope would be uncomfortable and difficult to maintain in this type of position.
